I was admitted to St. Vincent’s Carmel on Monday, Dec. 13, 2004 to be induced. After checking in, I was led to an LDR room with Ryan by my side. The nurse inserted needles in my arm and hooked me up to a fetal monitor. Then she inserted some cervix ripening gel and told me I was to be induced at 6:00 AM. I had trouble sleeping because I was feeling pretty nervous. At 6:00 AM on Tuesday morning, I took a shower before the nurse inserted the IV into my arm. They started my pitocin and at 8:00 AM I had dialated to 3 cm. An hour later, my contractions started hard. After a few hours of contractions, I couldn’t endure the pain any longer so I requested for an epidural. The epidural and the catheter didn’t hurt like I thought it would. My legs were heavy and numb. It was the most uncomfortable feeling. After 3 hours, I had dialated to 5 cm and the epidural wore off so the anesthesiologist had to reinject more. The epidural wore off after another 3 hours, then Dr. Hardacre came in to check on me. I had dialated to 10 cm so she told me it was time to push. I allowed Ryan and his mother to be in the room. An hour later, Ariana came into the world. I will never forget that moment for as long as I live. After the nurse asked Ryan to cut the umbilical cord, she swaddled Ariana in a small blanket and handed her to me. I held her in my arms and looked at her face. I finally understood the phrase “Love at first sight”.
